Taller Puertorriqueño – Self-Portrait Family & Selling Afrolatinidad
Friday, February 26, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
2557 N. 5th St.
Shaun Leonardo draws on his own family history and readings linked to identity politics of the Dominican Republic from colonial and post-colonial literature, developing a non-linear narrative about identity that participants from the audience are asked to embody and do as newly bestowed identities. Leonardo is a multidisciplinary artist who uses modes of self-portraiture to convey the complexities of masculine identity and question preconceived notions of manhood.
Following the performance is Amber Henry’s, Selling Afrolatinidad, a multi-media presentation of video, music, and live performance exploring, from the perspectives of government officials, tourists, and street vendors, the multiple actors involved in marketing blackness as a cultural product in Colombia.
